A strong believer in the power of storytelling, CEO Brian Phillips guides The Basement’s vision, product development and creative strategy. His goal: Drive a blend of narrative, design and digital technology that connects clients to customers. With a background in animation and UX design, Brian has taught as an adjunct faculty member at IUPUI and Ball State University, and spoken before industry organizations across the U.S. In an effort to cultivate Indiana’s growing animation industry, in 2010 he founded the MG Collective, a professional organization for animators and motion graphic artists. He and his wife and two kids love to call Indianapolis home.
As President of The Basement, Jacob Leffler leads and strengthens an organization that grows brands. Drawing on experience helping everything from fresh-faced start-ups to established international companies, he guides strategy and client services and ensures that his team is equipped with the tools, processes and operational resources to deliver better and better results for clients. His early-career experience demonstrates his big-strike capacity: While with McDonald’s, he led his corporate Indy market to No. 1 in sales in the US; at HomeYeah, he grew listings by 700 percent. Now he applies that kind ambition to The Basement’s client projects. Jacob and his work have been featured by Fast Company, Inc., Bloomberg, Advertising Age’s BtoB, Marketing Sherpa and AdRants. He and his wife have three kids and are active in their local Central Indiana community.
George Evans is a writer by vocation and a marketer by profession. He chose advertising as a “matter of sustenance” (to paraphrase the poet Evan Shipman) and as an outlet for his passion for telling a story. And tell he has for more than 35 years, both in the service of such brands as Nestlé, PNC, Heinz, GlaxoSmithKline and Transitions Optical and as a writer and publisher of short fiction. His specialties include brand development and new-product introductions and he's lent his creative talents, strategic vision and leadership to a host of agencies, including his own which he helmed for 10 years before teaming with The Basement. A frequent speaker, lecturer and industry awards judge (he has also won his share), George still writes when he can and lives in Indianapolis with his wife, an accomplished symphony musician, yoga teacher and educator.

The Basement is a collection of experienced illustrators, animators, designers, developers & thinkers. We understand our people define The Basement’s ethos. Style. Culture. Process. We are a team of makers. We’ve flourished in the digital age, but remain students of theory and tradition. We not only get it—we build it.
The term “dweller” was coined shortly after the genesis of the studio. As our name represents the place and state-of-mind, the icon represents the people doing the work, like the “Isz” in Sam Kieth's The Maxx or a subterranean cave full of Fraggles. The Dweller is our sans-eared “Mouse” and represents our child-like curiosity and style.
